ThemeReligious Heritage

Elephants, peacocks and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic turn green engraving into a ceremonial journey through Kandy.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Raja, the ceremonial tusker, carries the sacred relic casket during the Esala Perahera, accompanied by another elephant and mahout. A lion holding a whip occupies the left, while green and ochre ornament gathers around the procession and trilingual bank text. The StarChrome security thread crosses the field as a narrow colour-changing accent rather than separating the imagery.

Reverse

Two peacocks stand before the Paththirippuwa, the octagonal pavilion at Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Lotus flowers and architectural linework build a calmer, more symmetrical setting than the moving procession on the face. By shifting from festival to sacred place, the reverse completes the note's account of ritual, guardianship and pilgrimage.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-120d carries the printed date 3 July 2006 but did not enter circulation until 3 March 2008. That gap is the variety's most useful historical distinction, placing it later than its face date initially suggests. As the final regular form of the type, with a red-to-green StarChrome thread, it closes the ceremonial elephant series on a clear technical and chronological change.
