Ramboda Tunnel opens through green mountain rock, accompanied by an endemic hanging parrot and a delicate White Four Ring butterfly.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The old rock wall and entrance to the newer Ramboda Tunnel form the central subject, turning a mountain passage into an image of modern connection. A White Four Ring butterfly sits at lower left and the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot appears at right. Green engraving binds stone, engineering and native wildlife into a restrained horizontal composition.
Reverse
A Malpadaya Netuma dancer and Davul Bera drummer occupy the vertical reverse. Above them, a Naga-raja guard stone holds a sprouting branch and punkalasa beneath a hood of cobra heads, with conch and lotus emblems at its feet. Double liya vela ornament and the island map complete a denser field of dance and protective symbolism.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-127's 2022 issue carries the Wickremesinghe-Weerasinghe signatures into one of the series' higher denominations. It belongs to the coordinated 4 July 2022 group, making it relevant both to denomination specialists and to date-based sets. The enduring Ramboda Tunnel design also gives that administrative change an immediately recognisable visual setting.
