Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Historic and modern views of the Port of Colombo meet at the centre, bringing ships, containers and gantry cranes into a layered maritime panorama. A Baronet butterfly settles at lower left and the Sri Lanka Serendib Scops Owl stands at right, giving two small native forms equal presence beside heavy infrastructure. The lion emblem and trilingual inscriptions keep the busy scene formally ordered.

Reverse

The vertically arranged reverse pairs a Geta Bera drummer with a Ves Netuma dancer wearing the full ceremonial costume. A guard stone carved with the punkalasa, or pot of plenty, rises beside them against a map of Sri Lanka and flowing liya vela ornament. Dance, rhythm and the prosperity symbol draw the harbour theme back into cultural continuity rather than leaving development as an industrial image alone.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-123c is the first regular signature change after the original 2010-dated 20-rupee release. Dated 4 February 2015, it pairs Ravindra Sandresh Karunanayake with Lakshman Arjuna Mahendran while preserving the port-and-dance composition. It forms a useful bridge between the launch issue and the increasingly frequent administrative changes recorded by later dates.
