Red harbour light moves from cranes and ships to owl, butterfly and dance, compressing Sri Lanka's development story into a small denomination.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Port of Colombo forms the central panorama, joining an older sailing vessel to the container ships and gantry cranes of the modern harbour. A Baronet butterfly appears below, while the endemic Sri Lanka Serendib Scops Owl watches from the right edge. These living details temper the geometry of maritime trade and keep the scene rooted in the island rather than in infrastructure alone.

Reverse

A Geta Bera drummer and Ves Netuma dancer fill the reverse in vertical alignment, their bodies set against a faint map of Sri Lanka. The guard stone carries a punkalasa, the traditional pot of plenty, and curling liya vela ornament threads through the remaining space. The change from industrial shoreline to performance gives prosperity both an economic and cultural form.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 12 August 2020 printing retains the Mahinda Rajapaksa and Weligamage Don Lakshman signature pair of the preceding dated issue. The date therefore matters more than a change of signatories when placing it in sequence. Catalogued under the parent P-123 number, it belongs to the later run of dated varieties for which no separate Pick suffix has been confirmed.
