Ships and cranes gather beneath an endemic owl, while the reverse turns the harbour's mechanical energy into the pulse of Kandyan performance.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Colombo's port occupies the centre in two periods, placing an older ship beside container traffic and gantry cranes. The Baronet butterfly at lower left and Sri Lanka Serendib Scops Owl at right introduce species closely tied to the island into a field otherwise shaped by trade. Red and orange engraving keeps the industrial detail legible across the compact paper surface.
Reverse
The reverse opens vertically around a Geta Bera drummer and Ves Netuma dancer, with the dancer's elaborate costume forming the strongest pattern. Beside them, a muragala guard stone contains the punkalasa pot of plenty, while a Sri Lankan map and liya vela motif recede into the background. The imagery links physical development to inherited forms of movement, music and auspicious protection.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 15 September 2021 variety records Ajith Nivard Cabraal's return to the governor's signature line, now paired with Basil Rajapaksa. Both the renewed pairing and the date distinguish it from the 2020 printing while the port-and-dance artwork remains intact. Within a P-123 run, it captures a change in monetary leadership rather than a redesign.
