Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Past and present views of the Port of Colombo share the centre, where an older vessel gives way to container ships and gantry cranes. A Baronet butterfly rests at lower left, while the endemic Sri Lanka Serendib Scops Owl occupies the right edge. The small natural subjects soften the harbour's industrial geometry without competing with its scale.

Reverse

Viewed vertically, the reverse brings together a Geta Bera drummer and a Ves Netuma dancer in full ceremonial dress. A muragala guard stone contains the punkalasa pot of plenty, and a faint map of Sri Lanka lies beneath curling liya vela ornament. The composition shifts from maritime development to music, movement and traditional signs of prosperity.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 4 July 2022 issue introduces the Ranil Wickremesinghe and P. Nandalal Weerasinghe signature pairing to this denomination. It follows the short 2021 Rajapaksa-Cabraal stage while leaving the established harbour design unchanged. In a dated P-123 sequence, it records a clear change of monetary leadership during a period of rapid successive issues.
