Red and orange engraving carries the eye from Colombo's cranes and ships to an elusive island owl and the sweep of ceremonial dance.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The face layers an early view of Colombo's port behind its modern container terminals, ships and tall gantry cranes. A Baronet butterfly sits low in the design and the Sri Lanka Serendib Scops Owl stands to the right, placing endemic wildlife beside the machinery of trade. Trilingual inscriptions and compact value devices contain the panorama without closing it in.

Reverse

A Ves Netuma dancer and Geta Bera drummer animate the vertically arranged reverse. The nearby guard stone bears a punkalasa, the pot of plenty associated with prosperity, while the island outline and liya vela motif recede into the patterned ground. Human performance gives the second side a ceremonial pace distinct from the busy waterfront.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-123's 18 November 2024 printing brings Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the signature line beside P. Nandalal Weerasinghe. The new pairing separates it from the 2022 issue even though the artwork remains constant. It is a later chapter in a type whose collectable progression is carried chiefly by dates and signatories rather than redesigns.
