Three generations of bridge building cross a blue landscape where rail, road, butterfly and endemic birdlife occupy the same journey.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The new road bridge at Manampitiya anchors the centre, with the former combined road-and-rail bridge beside it and a stone railway arch fading above. A Blue Oakleaf butterfly appears at left and a Sri Lankan Dull Blue Flycatcher at right. Their organic silhouettes break the long horizontal lines of the crossings and train.

Reverse

A Vadiga Patuna dancer turns through the vertical reverse to the beat of a Yak Bera drummer. Above them, a guard stone carries the punkalasa pot of plenty, while liya vela ornament follows the right margin over a subdued map of Sri Lanka. The ceremonial figures counter the engineering narrative with a living low-country dance tradition.

For collectors, this 15 September 2021 issue marks Ajith Nivard Cabraal's return to the governor's signature line, paired here with Basil Rajapaksa. The bridge composition stayed unchanged, making the administrative handover the decisive point of identification. It fits naturally into a cross-denomination set of 2021-dated notes carrying the same signatories.
