ThemeTransportation

Manampitiya's bridges stretch across cool blue engraving, linking railway history and modern transport with native wings on either side.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A modern concrete road bridge at Manampitiya occupies the centre beside the older bridge once shared by trains and vehicles. The ghosted arch of an earlier stone railway bridge rises above them, turning the scene into a concise history of crossing and connection. A Blue Oakleaf butterfly and Dull Blue Flycatcher bring colour and local identity to the engineering study.

Reverse

The reverse stands upright around a Vadiga Patuna dancer and the Yak Bera drummer accompanying the performance. A punkalasa-bearing guard stone and a flowing liya vela pattern frame the figures against the island's outline. Dance and auspicious carving give the infrastructure-led face a distinctly cultural counterpart.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2022-dated P-124 introduces the Wickremesinghe-Weerasinghe pairing to the 50-rupee design. It succeeds the 2021 Rajapaksa-Cabraal issue without altering the bridge imagery, so the signature change supplies its place in the sequence. The same dated pairing across several denominations also supports a coherent contemporary signature set.
