ThemeIndustry & Infrastructure

Colombo's modern towers rise beside Lankathilaka Viharaya, with a parakeet and indigo butterfly carrying the purple design back to the island.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The World Trade Center twin towers and Bank of Ceylon head office define the Colombo skyline at centre. Lankathilaka Viharaya in Kandy appears to the right, bringing an ancient Buddhist monument into dialogue with the capital's modern buildings. A Ceylon Indigo Royal butterfly and endemic Emerald-collared Parakeet frame that architectural passage.

Reverse

Turned vertically, the reverse places a Thelme Netuma dancer beside a Yak Bera drummer. The Padmanidhi guard stone and a double liya vela floral pattern rise along the side over a pale map of Sri Lanka. The figures replace the face's fixed architecture with costume, rhythm and movement while retaining the theme of cultural continuity.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this 500-rupee note carries the 4 July 2022 Wickremesinghe-Weerasinghe pairing shared by several denominations of the series. Its appeal lies in completing that coordinated signature group at a higher face value. Within P-126, it also follows the brief 2021 issue and preserves the full contrast between Colombo's skyline and Lankathilaka Viharaya.
