ThemePortraits & People

Aqua and orange open the Anton de Kom composition into its only 250-gulden form, joining political memory to tropical birdlife.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A portrait of Anton de Kom stands at left above a row of buildings, accompanied by flags, faya lobi flowers and a star. The Monument of the Revolution answers from the right, its five soldiers and flag-bearing woman compressed into a compact vignette. Aqua, orange and brown printing distinguishes the new denomination without altering the shared historical programme of the series.

Reverse

The reverse moves from a toucan perched among tropical flowers to the crowd listening to de Kom outside his father's house on 1 February 1933. Hibiscus, heliconia, ginger and faya lobi flowers fill the intervening space, softening the transition between wildlife and political assembly. The toucan watermark repeats the principal bird motif within the paper itself.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-134 introduced 250 gulden as a new denomination in this family rather than revising a value from the preceding 1982-1985 series. It exists as a single dated circulation type with AA and AB prefixes, so there is no lettered Pick variety to resolve. That unusual denomination gives the note a distinct role in an otherwise closely repeated six-value design set.
