ThemeLandscapes & Nature

A waterlily and the Waterkant headquarters open onto a reverse of coconut palm, forest and the broken water of the Gran-Rio near Sula.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The headquarters of the Central Bank of Suriname at the Waterkant stands beside a Missouri waterlily. Orange and red tones warm the formal architecture, while brown, green and blue details lead outward to the coat of arms and CBVS registration device. The composition introduces the country's dollar currency through a familiar institution set against a precise botanical subject.

Reverse

A coconut palm rises above forest and rapids on the Gran-Rio near Sula. The river landscape receives most of the pictorial space, with the CBVS registration device and Dutch text integrated into the surrounding pattern. Rather than repeating the architecture of the face, the reverse moves inland and gives the denomination a broad natural setting shaped by vegetation and fast water.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-157c is dated 1 May 2009 and retains André Eugene Telting's signature from the earlier printings. Its practical identifying feature is the translucent band moved to the back, a change that separates it from P-157a of 2004 and P-157b of 2006 without altering the waterlily and Gran-Rio design. It is the final dated form of the original five-dollar type.
