ThemeLandscapes & Nature

Waterkant architecture and a waterlily face a deep forest-and-river landscape, now carried on a hybrid note with a prominent holographic stripe.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Central Bank of Suriname headquarters at the Waterkant appears beside a Missouri waterlily, framed by the coat of arms and a CBVS registration device. Orange, red, brown, green and blue printing retains the imagery of the preceding five-dollar issue, but the holographic stripe gives the face a visibly different security structure. The blue vertical date and relocated signature further distinguish this 2012 printing.

Reverse

A coconut palm, forest and the rapids of the Gran-Rio near Sula spread across the reverse. The natural scene is paired with the CBVS registration device and reshaped denomination numerals, while the windowed thread carries demetalised SRD lettering. The familiar landscape is therefore preserved inside a substantially revised production format rather than redrawn as a new subject.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-162b is the 1 April 2012 hybrid printing with Gillmore Hoefdraad's signature, blue vertical date and GA-GB prefixes. Those features separate it from the paper P-162a dated 2010, which has André Eugene Telting's signature and a horizontal red date. Substrate and printer also differ, even though the waterlily and Gran-Rio artwork is shared.
