ThemePortraits & People

Gottfried Keller's portrait and a spray of Geum flowers share the brown-red engraving of this Swiss ten-franc note.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Keller's bearded profile occupies an oval at the right, looking inward across an oversized 10. Flowing guilloche curves cross behind the numeral and continue beneath the multilingual bank title. Three signatures run along the lower edge, below the printed date of 24 January 1972, within the same interwoven brown and purple linework.

Reverse

A cluster of Geum flowers rises through the centre and left, its stems and leaves picked out against a lightly patterned field. The large denomination occupies the right side. The floral composition is the work of Hermann Eidenbenz, who designed this fifth-series ten-franc note.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1972 date and Aebersold–Galli–Stopper signatures identify this printing within a long-running fifth-series design first issued in 1956. The suffix in P-45r(1) distinguishes a catalogued variety; it does not turn the note into a replacement issue. The full date and all three signatures separate it from neighbouring printings.
