ThemeTransportation

Bosra and Philip the Arab occupy the face, while the Hejaz Railway carries the reverse into Syria’s modern transport history.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Bosra's Roman theatre forms the architectural centre, flanked by ancient vessels and winged mythological animals. A bust of Roman emperor Philip the Arab brings a named historical figure into the composition, while Arabic text and a coat-of-arms registration device organize the blue, purple, brown and green surface. The mix of portrait, ruins and antiquities gives the face a deliberate archaeological order.

Reverse

A Hejaz Railway steam locomotive faces the station at Damascus-Kanawat, with a freeway interchange extending the transport story into the automobile age. A fig branch enters from the side and softens the mechanical imagery. English bank text and the national coat of arms hold the scenes together, making the reverse read as a compact chronology of Syrian mobility.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the paired transport subjects distinguish this denomination within Syria’s 1998 banknote family. The locomotive and Damascus–Kanawat station connect it with the Hejaz Railway, while the road interchange extends the theme into modern travel. Compared with neighbouring denominations, its transport programme is the most immediate point of visual identification.
