A saluting soldier and Syrian flag introduce the final dated form of the 5,000-pound design, while Palmyra shapes the reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The brown and grey face shows a Syrian soldier saluting beside the national flag. Arabic bank text, the 2024 date and a large denomination occupy the open centre, with a concave sixteen-sided registration device built into the surrounding pattern. A holographic windowed thread and the watermark combining Syria's eagle emblem with electrotype 5000 secure the high-value format.
Reverse
Palmyra supplies the reverse imagery through a fresco from the Baal Shemin Temple, where an eagle and the sun god Yarhibol appear. English bank text, a concave sixteen-sided registration device and a stylised olive-branch ornament complete the composition. The reverse therefore centres on archaeological art rather than repeating the military emphasis of the face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2024 date and Yaghi–Hazima signatures distinguish the last listed variety of Syria’s 5,000-pound type. Its soldier and Palmyra subjects remain unchanged from earlier forms. Paired with the subsequent 50-pound note, it illustrates the 100:1 currency conversion introduced on 1 January 2026 through two consecutive designs.
