Karume's formal portrait opens onto university life, where graduating students and Dar es Salaam's central hall give education a public, national setting.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, the first president of Zanzibar, appears at right within a green field of Swahili text and layered geometric pattern. Tanzania's national emblem and a denomination registration device balance the portrait, while the pale watermark area and vertical security feature divide the compact face into clearly ordered sections.
Reverse
The central hall of the University of Dar es Salaam rises behind students in graduation caps and gowns. A snake coiled around a staff and a giraffe head add smaller emblems to the academic scene, while English inscriptions and the denomination registration device carry the green palette across the broad horizontal composition.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this was the lowest denomination of Tanzania's coordinated 2010 design family when it entered circulation on 1 January 2011. It carries the Mustafa Mkulo and Benno Ndulu signatures and prefixes AA to CT. Withdrawal in 2016 gave the type a notably shorter circulation life than the four larger values introduced beside it.
