ThemePortraits & People

Rama IX's formal portrait opens toward Rama V on horseback, carrying royal memory across a compact field of disciplined brown engraving.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) appears in the uniform of Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, facing inward from the right. Thai inscriptions, the Royal Garuda emblem and close brown guilloche surround the portrait, while the watermark reserve introduces a pale vertical pause within the otherwise dense face.

Reverse

The equestrian monument of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) rises within the Royal Dusit Palace grounds in Bangkok. Horse and rider give the reverse a firmer silhouette than the patterned front, while the Royal Garuda and Thai lettering return the public monument to the formal language of state currency.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1980 year identifies the introduction of the Series 12 ten-baht design rather than a date printed on the note. This sixth variety carries the later Pramual Sapavasu and Chavalit Thanachanan signatures. Signature pairing, not the unchanged royal imagery, fixes its position within the long issue sequence.
