Design & Symbolism
Obverse
King Tupou VI appears beside Tonga's national emblem and a prominent medallion within a light-red field of bilingual text. The revised arrangement gives the face more open space than its predecessor, while the portrait watermark, electrotype NRBT and narrow windowed thread preserve familiar security elements in the paper denomination.
Reverse
A whale rises from the sea across the reverse, now presented without the circular medallion that accompanied the earlier design. English and Tongan text, denomination figures and restrained guilloche frame the animal. The simplified setting gives the marine vignette greater visual breadth and a cleaner contrast with the portrait side.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2023 issue is the paper member at the foot of a family in which the five-paʻanga and higher denominations moved to polymer. It entered circulation on 4 December with Siaosi Sovaleni, Tiofilusi Tiueti and Tatafu Moeaki signatures and prefix A. The front medallion and revised reverse provide quick visual checks.
