Hannibal's helmeted portrait and the circular port of Carthage give this green five-dinar design its distinctly Punic setting.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Hannibal occupies the left-centre in profile, his helmet and facial features engraved in deep green. An olive branch accompanies the portrait, while the circular harbour of ancient Carthage spreads across the right. The watermark area remains at the far left.
Reverse
A large stylised 7 anchors a montage of a sailing ship, an antelope, a flamingo, an oil refinery and a fish mosaic. The number refers to 7 November 1987, the political anniversary commemorated by this series.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this Hannibal five dinars belongs to an anniversary series referencing the change of power on 7 November 1987. It subsequently served as the basis for the 2008 revision. The 1993 date, solid security thread and Souayah–Hamda signatures separate this original design generation from the later security-updated printing.
