Ukraine 1 Hryvnia 2006, P-116Aa, UNC

Gold and blue fields place Volodymyr the Great opposite an imagined reconstruction of princely Kyiv.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A portrait of Grand Prince Volodymyr the Great dominates the front, accompanied by the Ukrainian trident and compact ornamental detail. The warm yellow palette is crossed by blue accents, while the embedded security thread and portrait watermark sit naturally within a design centred on dynastic rule and state formation.

Reverse

The reverse reconstructs Volodymyr’s fortified Kyiv with walls, towers and churches spread across the horizontal field. Smaller emblems—including an eagle, cross, mace, axe and sword—extend the medieval vocabulary beyond architecture and give the imagined city the character of a princely seat.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2006 issue opens this three-signature run with Volodymyr Stelmakh. The 2011 and 2014 notes preserve the same portrait-and-city design but carry Serhii Arbuzov and Valeriia Gontareva respectively, so the signature provides the clearest way to organize the sequence.
