A compact coupon-era note links Kyiv’s founding legend with the domes of Saint Sophia at the threshold of Ukrainian independence.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Warm brown and yellow engraving frames a statue of Lybid from the Founders of Kyiv monument in Navodnytsky Park. The figure and boat-shaped memorial refer to the legendary siblings associated with the city’s origins, while Ukrainian inscriptions and ornamental borders give the small format a distinctly civic character.
Reverse
Saint Sophia’s Cathedral occupies the reverse, its clustered domes compressed into a finely engraved architectural vignette. Repeated denomination numerals and guilloché borders surround the landmark without competing with it, carrying the design from legendary foundation to one of Kyiv’s most recognisable historic buildings.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-81a(2) is the UV-detectable variety: a latent “1 КРБ” appears at left on the front under ultraviolet light, while P-81a(1) has no such imprint. Ordinary lighting may not reveal the difference, so UV examination is the reliable way to separate the two.
