A ruler’s monument and the headquarters of the young central bank share a design poised between historical memory and new institutions.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Volodymyr the Great stands on his Kyiv monument holding a cross, set against light green and blue ornament. The trident registration device and Ukrainian inscriptions integrate the medieval ruler into the monetary language of independent Ukraine, with the taller format giving the monument unusual prominence.
Reverse
The headquarters of the National Bank of Ukraine forms the architectural focus of the reverse. Its formal façade is paired with the trident and layered geometric patterning, shifting the note from the historical authority of Volodymyr to the modern institution responsible for the currency.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1996 issue belongs to the final high-denomination phase before the hryvnia replaced the karbovanets. Prefixes КА–КЄ, the absence of a printed signature and the parquet-pattern watermark define the variety, while its larger format separates it physically from the 5,000-karbovantsiv note.
