ThemePortraits & People

Yaroslav the Wise faces the cathedral most closely associated with his Kyiv, joined by the objects of princely rule.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A brown-toned portrait of Yaroslav the Wise fills the front beside the Ukrainian trident and denomination. Dense geometric engraving gives the background the texture of manuscript ornament, while the matching portrait watermark and demetallized thread remain secondary to the ruler’s direct gaze.

Reverse

Saint Sophia’s Cathedral anchors the reverse, accompanied by a bowl, helmet, crossed swords and a document. These objects turn the architectural view into a wider evocation of court, law and warfare, all held together by the same restrained brown palette.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2011 note is the Serhii Arbuzov signature variety. It forms the first of three closely related dates in this group, followed by Ihor Sorkin in 2013 and the sheet-cut Yakiv Smolii issue of 2018, all sharing the same Yaroslav and Saint Sophia design.
