Ukraine 2 Hryvni 2013, P-117d, UNC

The thoughtful face of Yaroslav the Wise is paired with Saint Sophia and a compact group of princely attributes.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Yaroslav the Wise appears in a finely engraved brown portrait, balanced by the trident and denomination. Layered linear patterns draw the eye inward, and the portrait watermark repeats his profile as a quieter companion to the printed image.

Reverse

The domes of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral rise behind a bowl, helmet, swords and an inscribed document. Architecture and objects share the field without crowding it, binding Kyiv’s sacred landmark to the legal and military associations of Yaroslav’s reign.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, Ihor Sorkin’s signature places the 2013 note between the Arbuzov-signed 2011 issue and the Smolii-signed 2018 numismatic product. That middle position is its main collecting distinction, because the portrait, cathedral and principal security features continued without a redesign.
