Ukraine 2 Hryvni 2018, P-117e, UNC

Yaroslav the Wise and Saint Sophia return in a 2018 issue whose collecting story lies in how the notes were released.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The familiar portrait of Yaroslav the Wise occupies the brown front beside the trident and value markings. Compact guilloché work and the integrated security thread frame the portrait, preserving the sober medieval character of the long-running two-hryvni design.

Reverse

Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is accompanied by a bowl, helmet, swords and a document, connecting the landmark with the ruler’s courtly, legal and military legacy. The restrained layout keeps the cathedral as the visual destination after the portrait-led face.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2018 Yakiv Smolii variety was sold as a numismatic product cut from 60-note sheets, not introduced as a normal circulation printing. That release method, together with the later signature, distinguishes it from the otherwise nearly identical 2011 and 2013 notes.
