Ivan Franko and Lviv’s opera house carry a literary anniversary across paper strengthened with Ukrainian flax fibres.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A grave portrait of Ivan Franko leads the green, blue and brown front, accompanied by the trident and a colour-shifting feature marked for the 160th anniversary of his birth. The security elements remain woven into the portrait-led layout, leaving the commemorative inscription clear but restrained.
Reverse
The Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet spans the back, with the winged female roof figure holding a fern placed above the façade. Architecture and allegorical ornament turn the reverse into a cultural setting for Franko’s literary legacy rather than a simple landmark study.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the issue was limited to one million notes for the 160th anniversary of Ivan Franko’s birth. Twenty thousand were supplied in presentation folders and the remainder sold separately. Flax fibres in the paper and the dedicated anniversary device distinguish it from regular 20-hryven printings.
