Ukraine 20 Hryven 2023, P-A126, UNC

Ivan Franko’s grave portrait is answered by the theatrical splendour of Lviv’s opera house in a mature modern design.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Writer Ivan Franko occupies the front beside the Ukrainian trident and a colour-shifting geometric feature. Green, blue and brown layers move from portrait engraving into open tonal fields, while the watermark repeats Franko’s likeness with an electrotype 20.

Reverse

The Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet fills the reverse, with the winged female figure holding a fern from the roof sculpture included above the architecture. The theatre’s elaborate façade gives Franko’s literary portrait an urban cultural setting rooted in western Ukraine.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, Andriy Pyshnyy’s signature identifies this 2023 circulation issue. It is also the regular-design counterpart to the 2025 commemorative version, which keeps Franko and the Lviv opera house but adds the “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!” inscription on the reverse.
