Historic Kyiv imagery fronts an unusually high-value certificate whose reverse is devoted almost entirely to rules, rights and redemption.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The two-million-karbovantsiv face combines the Bohdan Khmelnytsky monument with a view of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Pink, blue and violet tones soften the dense official text, while the historic subjects lend national weight to a document created to compensate indexed savings rather than function as an ordinary cash note.
Reverse
A broad text panel sets out the certificate’s conditions of use, accompanied by official validation elements and restrained ornament. The administrative layout is deliberate: imagery yields to the legal terms governing compensation and privatization, making the reverse read more like a state financial instrument than a conventional banknote.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this is a compensation certificate rather than an ordinary cash issue. It converted indexed savings into a document usable in Ukraine’s privatization process and ceased to be valid after 1 July 1997. The exceptional denomination and text-heavy format give it a separate place beside the circulating karbovanets series.
