ThemePortraits & People

Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s portrait opens onto the church at Subotiv and an array of Cossack arms.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky is portrayed in blue, green and red, with the trident and denomination set into intricate geometric work. The firm profile and darker central engraving give the face a commanding weight, supported by a portrait watermark and demetallized value thread.

Reverse

Illinska Church in Subotiv stands beside a quiver, bow, spears, mace, flintlock pistol and swords. Rather than presenting the building in isolation, the reverse surrounds it with Cossack-era objects that connect place, command and armed struggle across the compact composition.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, Ihor Sorkin’s signature identifies the 2013 printing within the two-note group offered here. The design continued in 2015 under Valeriia Gontareva, so checking the signature prevents two visually near-identical five-hryven issues from being combined in one listing.
