Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s profile dominates the richly patterned face in blue, green and red. The trident and denomination sit within the surrounding line work, while the embedded thread and portrait watermark echo the value without drawing attention away from the hetman.
Reverse
The Illinska Church at Subotiv is framed by a quiver, bow, spears, mace, pistol and swords. Their diagonal forms animate the otherwise quiet architecture, joining a specific place associated with Khmelnytsky to the material culture of the Cossack world.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the Valeriia Gontareva signature distinguishes the 2015 issue from its Ihor Sorkin predecessor of 2013. Both use the same portrait, church and Cossack arms, making the governor’s name and date the meaningful points for a complete variety run.
