ThemePortraits & People

Mykhailo Hrushevskyi faces the former Central Council building, joining scholarship, politics and the architecture of statehood.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Historian and statesman Mykhailo Hrushevskyi is set among violet, brown, blue and red layers. A stylized flower, mounted figure, banner and colour-shifting element enrich the field around his portrait, while the trident supplies the national reference point.

Reverse

The building of the Ukrainian Central Council in Kyiv extends across the reverse, flanked by standing male and female figures. Its ordered façade gives institutional form to the political history associated with Hrushevskyi, turning the back into a companion to the statesman’s portrait rather than a separate city view.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, Kyrylo Shevchenko’s signature fixes this as the 2021 regular issue. The same Hrushevskyi and Central Council design later returned in 2024 with Andriy Pyshnyy’s signature and the patriotic reverse inscription, creating a clearly related pair with different issue status.
