Kyiv’s legendary founders move across a pale blue field, answered on the reverse by the domes of Saint Sophia.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The monument to Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid stretches across the front in a boat-like silhouette. A trident-shaped registration device and Ukrainian lettering anchor the pale blue, grey and pink design, turning the founding legend of Kyiv into the principal image of the denomination.
Reverse
Saint Sophia’s Cathedral rises behind layered guilloché work and a repeated trident device. Its domes provide a quiet architectural counterpoint to the moving figures on the front, linking the city’s legendary beginnings with the medieval monument that became one of its defining landmarks.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1995 issue marks the move to domestic National Bank production after earlier coupon notes had been printed abroad. It carries no printed signature and retains the parquet-pattern watermark, making printing origin and year more useful identifiers than changes in the artwork.
