ThemeCultural Heritage

Uzbekistan’s coat of arms and Sher-Dor Madrasah in Samarkand give the 1 Sum a compact pairing of new state identity and established architectural heritage.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Orange, blue and gray guilloche fields frame the coat of arms of Uzbekistan at left and a large numeral 1 at right. Uzbek inscriptions run across the upper and lower portions, while the serial number follows the lower edge. Fine geometric patterns and an open central field keep the national emblem and denomination visually dominant.

Reverse

Sher-Dor Madrasah of the Registan in Samarkand occupies the central architectural vignette, rendered in pale blue-gray lines within an ornate pointed frame. Small denomination cartouches sit in all four corners, accompanied by star and floral motifs. Repeating geometric patterns fill the background and echo the decoration of the monument's tiled portal.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-61a(1) opens the first-sum banknote series issued on 15 November 1993 after the Soviet ruble was replaced at par. The series lasted only until 1 August 1994, making this denomination a direct document of Uzbekistan’s brief first-sum interval.
