The redesigned 5,000 Sum moves the Great Silk Road theme to Samarkand, linking Sher-Dor Madrasah with Afrosiyob archaeology and historic decorative arts.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Green, brown and blue fields place Sher-Dor Madrasah in Samarkand at left-center, layered with a winged-leopard registration device. Caravan routes cross a map of Uzbekistan to the right, accompanied by textile patterns, Uzbek inscriptions and the national coat of arms. A color-shifting denomination and holographic security thread add vertical accents to the composition.
Reverse
Afrosiyob archaeological monument forms the landscape backdrop, accompanied by a tenth-century tray and jug from Afrosiab in the foreground. A winged leopard and embroidery-derived ornament connect the artifacts to the note's broader Silk Road theme. Uzbek inscriptions, denomination numerals and pale angular color panels divide the reverse into archaeological, decorative and security zones.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-88 is a complete redesign of the 5,000 Sum rather than a continuation of the 2013 note. Samarkand and Afrosiyob replace the earlier Oliy Majlis imagery, while the 2-mm holographic UZB thread marks a new security treatment.
