Conch shells, dancing boys and a sand drawing link Vanuatu's purple five-hundred-vatu note to living cultural practices.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A conch shell sits at the left, opposite the spear-bearing chief within the national arms. The islands of Vanuatu extend through the background beside the central-bank lettering. Purple and blue dominate the design, crossed by reddish bands and transparent polymer details.
Reverse
Boys dance outside a large community building while a kneeling man works a drawing into the sand in the foreground. Vanuatu's sand-drawing tradition uses a continuous line to record and communicate knowledge, including stories and histories. Another conch shell appears at the right.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-18(2) identifies the regular five hundred vatu, distinct from presentation examples bearing additional handwritten signatures. It is also separate from the Pacific Mini Games overprint issued in the same year. The shared base design makes the signature treatment and presence or absence of the Games emblem important identification points.
