Vanuatu 500 Vatu 2017, P-20, UNC

A bright Pacific Mini Games emblem joins the shells and standing chief of Vanuatu's purple five-hundred-vatu note.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The multicoloured Vanuatu 2017 Pacific Mini Games emblem sits beside the chief and national arms. A conch shell occupies the left, with the island chain visible in the background. Red, yellow and green in the event mark contrast with the predominantly purple-blue base design.

Reverse

A kneeling sand artist occupies the foreground beneath a line of boys performing a dance. Behind them stands a large community building, its high roof giving the scene a broad triangular backdrop. The figures, architecture and conch shell are retained from the regular five hundred vatu, so the event-specific addition is confined to the front.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this is the Pacific Mini Games commemorative, issued for Vanuatu's hosting of the 2017 event. It uses the same denomination and base design as the regular polymer note of that year. The Games emblem supplies the decisive distinction, allowing the pair to document an event overprint without confusing it with a new banknote design.
