ThemeIndustry & Infrastructure

An elephant strains against a felled trunk, turning the reverse into one of Vietnam's most direct images of labour in the forest.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Ho Chi Minh appears at right against a pale field of purple, green and yellow ornament. The national coat of arms and red serial number balance the portrait at left, while an elaborate 1,000-value device occupies the lower centre. Broad guilloche bands and floral curves create movement without interrupting the calm front-facing portrait.

Reverse

A mahout rides an elephant as it drags a felled tree through the forest. The animal and timber form a strong diagonal across the reverse, with dense vegetation and a second figure extending the scene into the background. Dark engraving and a broad open margin give the act of hauling unusual physical weight within the compact format.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-106a(1) comes from the group of higher denominations introduced on 20 October 1989 as Vietnam's post-reform note system expanded. The Pick sub-number records a production variety rather than a change to the forestry composition. The unusually specific working-elephant subject gives the note a distinct position in both regional and wildlife-oriented collections.
