Forest labour replaces ceremony on the reverse, where an elephant and mahout pull a heavy trunk through tightly engraved vegetation.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A composed portrait of Ho Chi Minh holds the right side, surrounded by purple scrollwork and soft yellow and blue underprinting. Opposite it, the national coat of arms and serial number occupy the lighter field, while the large denomination panel settles along the base. The portrait, emblem and value form three separate visual anchors joined by continuous ornament.

Reverse

The reverse follows an elephant hauling a felled tree under the guidance of a mahout. The trunk points across the scene like a heavy beam, drawing attention to the animal's effort and the practical use of forest labour. Fine black and green linework keeps the figures, timber and wooded setting readable without romanticising the work.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-106a(2) is the companion production variety within the 1988-dated 1,000-dong type. It shares the October 1989 introduction and long circulation span of the wider design, which was not withdrawn until December 2003. Collected beside P-106a(1), it adds depth to a type set without duplicating a separate artistic issue.
