A low bridge carries the eye across a busy river, turning this small denomination into a compact portrait of movement and place.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The national coat of arms occupies the centre of the face, set above an oval value device and framed by dense blackish-brown engraving. Red serial numbers run across the lighter lower field, while green and blue guilloche work softens the otherwise formal state composition. With no portrait or architectural vignette, the emblem remains the clear point of authority.
Reverse
Trang Tien Bridge crosses the Huong River behind moored boats and a line of riverside buildings. The long span draws the composition from left to right, opening the reverse into a wider landscape after the concentrated emblematic face. Fine green engraving keeps the boats, bridge and waterfront distinct within the modest format.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-85 belongs to the brief 1980-1981 extension of Vietnam's first post-reunification dong series. Introduced in 1981 and withdrawn when the 1985 currency reform took effect, it sits at a precise monetary turning point. The denomination's short life and its identifiable Hue river scene give it more historical definition than its small face value might suggest.
