Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Ho Chi Minh's portrait occupies the right side in reddish-brown linework, paired with the national coat of arms on the left. A five-pointed star pattern spreads through the central field behind the written denomination, while purple and blue underprinting adds depth to the pale ground. Large corner values and compact ornament keep the broad face visually taut.

Reverse

Hai Phong Port unfolds across the reverse with cranes, trucks and ships arranged along the dock. Vertical lifting gear breaks the low harbour skyline, while vehicles and vessels bring several forms of transport into the same industrial scene. The restrained red engraving turns a busy working port into a clear, legible panorama rather than a dense mechanical catalogue.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-101a(1) belongs to the first 500-dong design of the 1987-1988 issue group and entered circulation on 15 August 1989. It is catalogued separately from its closely related companion variety, even though both share the same harbour composition. That combination of modest value, fine production distinction and dated late-socialist industrial imagery gives the note several collecting routes.
