Saigon's Independence Palace faces a line of working elephants in the blue-green design of this thousand-dong note.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Independence Palace occupies the right half, its long façade and repeated vertical divisions rendered in blue over green underprinting. A pale watermark area opens the centre-left, bordered by floral ornament. The National Bank's title stretches above the palace, with the denomination along the lower edge.
Reverse
Three elephants carry riders and loads across a lightly wooded landscape. Two overlap at the left, with a smaller third elephant farther away to the right. Corner values and the bank's Vietnamese name frame the blue-and-green scene.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the elephant reverse belongs to South Vietnam's 1972 animal-design group. The thousand dong entered circulation, whereas the related five-thousand-dong design with a leopard remained unissued. That distinction matters when assembling the group: an album can contain both designs, but they do not share the same history as circulating money.
