A phoenix, dragons and a buffalo-drawn plough combine dense ornament with rice-field work on this olive-green five-dong note.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
An elaborate phoenix and curling dragon forms are woven into the ornamental face, where foliage and fine scrollwork surround the denomination. Olive-green lines stand over a lighter ground, with the bank title across the top. A pale watermark area occupies the left side.
Reverse
A farmer guides a plough behind a water buffalo through a rice paddy. Parallel field boundaries recede behind the animal across a lightly coloured landscape. Dragons frame the agricultural scene, repeating the mythological ornament found on the front.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this De La Rue five dong is one of two markedly different five-dong designs associated with the National Bank's 1955 issues. The other is a smaller red note printed by Security Banknote Company. Comparing the two reveals how several printers and design traditions coexisted in the bank's earliest currency programme.
