ThemeCultural Heritage

A blue view of Al Baqilyah Mosque faces the engineering legacy of Ma'rib Dam, joining sacred architecture, water control and coffee cultivation.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Al Baqilyah Mosque stands at left within dense blue engraving, its dome, minaret and arcaded walls giving the face a distinctly architectural centre. Arabic bank text occupies the open field to the right, framed by broad value numerals and repeating geometric borders. The restrained palette allows the mosque's silhouette and the fine ornamental linework to carry the design.

Reverse

Ma'rib Dam stretches across the reverse beneath the English title of the Central Bank of Yemen. A fruiting coffee branch rises beside the dam, pairing a major historic waterwork with one of Yemen's best-known crops. Unlike the closely related later 10-rial type, this reverse does not carry the added Arabic caption and denomination at lower right.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-23b records the immediate monetary transition that followed Yemeni unification in May 1990. The revised watermark removes the stars carried by the earlier republican flags, while the design itself remains almost unchanged. Introduced on 26 June 1990, it forms the post-unification half of a compact two-variety type and rewards attention to the paper rather than the printed scene.
