Yemen 500 Rials 2007, P-34, UNC

Dar al-Hajar rises directly from its rock on the blue face, answered by the tall mud-brick minaret of Al Muhdar Mosque at Tarim.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Dar al-Hajar, the celebrated rock palace at Wadi Dahr, dominates the face in layered blue engraving. Its stacked windows and irregular height follow the stone outcrop beneath, while Arabic inscriptions occupy the quieter field alongside it. The holographic stripe adds a vertical counterpoint to the palace and separates the architectural vignette from the serial-number area.

Reverse

Al Muhdar Mosque in Tarim provides the reverse subject, with its exceptionally tall square minaret rising above the surrounding Hadrami buildings. English bank text and the denomination sit within blue ornamental frames, leaving the pale architecture clearly readable. The contrast between the mosque's geometric tower and the more organic rock palace gives the two sides distinct regional identities.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-34 is the dated 1428 AH and 2007 continuation of Yemen's long-running 500-rial architectural type. It retains the palace-and-mosque pairing seen on the 2001 issue, but the placement of the holographic stripe offers a practical distinction between the two catalogue types. The printed dual date also removes the uncertainty that accompanies many earlier undated Yemeni notes.
