With the 1 New Zaire, the 1993 reform reaches its base unit: Mobutu and the leopard remain on the front, while the Banque du Zaïre building defines the reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
At the first whole-unit denomination of the reform, Mobutu Sésé Seko is shown in uniform and cap beside a leopard and the Zaire coat of arms.
Reverse
The Banque du Zaïre building is presented as the sole architectural vignette, with French text, bank initials and the denomination around it.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-52 is the first whole-unit denomination of the Nouveau Zaïre system. One nouveau zaïre replaced three million old zaïres in October 1993, so this note represents the new monetary unit itself rather than the fractional new-makuta values below it.
