The reform-era 5 New Makuta links Mobutu’s military portrait with the Kamanyola battle monument in South Kivu, giving a fractional denomination a distinctly historical reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Mobutu Sésé Seko, in military uniform and cap, dominates the front beside a leopard; French text identifies the new 5 Makuta denomination.
Reverse
The Monument of the Kamanyola battle in South Kivu is paired with the Zaire coat of arms and Banque du Zaïre initials.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-48 belongs to the fractional opening of the Nouveau Zaïre system, created at a conversion of one new zaïre to three million old zaïres. It was printed by Giesecke+Devrient and has no watermark, unlike the Ciccone-printed 10- and 50-New-Makuta types in the same reform family.
