Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The front repeats the reform family’s central portrait formula, with Mobutu Sésé Seko in military uniform and cap beside a leopard and the national coat of arms.
Reverse
The Palais de la Nation in Kinshasa fills the reverse as the principal subject, accompanied by Banque du Zaïre initials.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-53a is part of the Giesecke+Devrient-printed core of the first Nouveau Zaïre family. Its date falls in the reform year when inflation was estimated at about 3,000%, placing the note directly within the monetary crisis the revaluation was intended to address.
