Zambia 5 Kwacha 1986-1987, P-25d, UNC

The brown 5 Kwacha pairs Kaunda and the fish eagle with a hydroelectric dam, linking national imagery to Zambia’s power infrastructure.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Brown ornamental fields place a fish eagle at left and President Kenneth Kaunda's portrait at right, with the Zambian coat of arms centered below the Bank of Zambia title. Flowers and layered guilloche patterns fill the background. Large corner denominations and multicolored geometric panels create a strong frame around the two principal portraits.

Reverse

A hydroelectric dam extends across the central reverse scene, with water and the surrounding terrain rendered in layered brown engraving. An emblem combining a bird, fish and human face appears at the upper left. Denomination numerals anchor the corners and lower band, while angled patterned panels and a pale field at right complete the composition.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-25d is the final regular signature variety of this 5 Kwacha design, carrying Leonard S. Chivuno’s signature and prefixes 32/C–46/C. It follows the shorter David Abel Ray Phiri variety and closes the type’s signature sequence.
