The purple 5 Kwacha pairs Zambia’s fish eagle with a lion and cassava plant, while the Freedom Statue completes the reverse design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Purple patterned fields place a fish eagle perched on a branch at right, with the Zambian coat of arms, a dove and a murera, acacia or mopani tree arranged across the left and center. English inscriptions and denomination numerals overlay the guilloche background, while tactile diagonal lines flank the composition for visually impaired users.
Reverse
A lion head dominates the left wildlife panel, while a cassava plant with roots and leaves occupies the center. The Freedom Statue stands at right, separating the agricultural subject from the national monument. Purple geometric patterns, large denomination panels and a pale background organize the three subjects into a continuous horizontal reverse design.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2020 P-57 is B166b, an Oberthur-printed continuation of the upgraded 5 Kwacha issue. Its BS/20 prefix separates it from the 2018 variety and the 2021 issue signed by Christopher Mphanza Mvunga.
